Expert Lithium Battery Review: Testing Lifespan and Performance
Battery performance claims are easier to assess when the test conditions and product model are clear. Use this guide to compare documentation, understand cycle-life figures and ask useful questions before choosing a battery.
Read cycle life together with its conditions
Look for the depth of discharge, charge and discharge current, temperature and capacity-retention threshold associated with a cycle-life claim. Ask for missing conditions before comparing two headline numbers.
For example, Victron's Lithium Smart technical data lists different cycle counts at different depths of discharge and defines its cycle-life threshold in relation to nominal capacity. It also lists capacity at different temperatures. These figures describe that product range and are not specifications for Gree Battery products.
Separate capacity, energy and power ratings
Record nominal voltage, capacity in amp-hours, energy in watt-hours and continuous discharge current for each model. Compare the permitted peak current and its duration separately. Check that the battery's ratings meet the requirements of your equipment, charger and installation.
A runtime estimate should state the load and assumptions used. Ask whether a published figure comes from a calculation or a measured test, and whether accessories and conversion losses are included.
Ask what a test report actually covers
- Which exact battery model and revision were tested?
- Who performed the test, and when?
- What charging settings, loads and environmental conditions were used?
- How many samples were tested, and were individual results reported?
- What endpoint defined the reported cycle life?
A table without its source and method is insufficient evidence for a product comparison. Request the underlying report before treating sample numbers as representative of a battery you intend to buy.
Check the scope of safety certification
Ask for the applicable standard, model identification and certification record. Check whether the documentation covers a cell, battery pack or complete system. UL Solutions describes different testing requirements for different battery applications.
Safety standards have defined scopes. The published scope of UL 1973:2022, for example, states that it does not evaluate capacity performance or reliability under the listed discharge and environmental conditions. A reference to that standard alone does not establish a runtime or cycle-life claim. This article does not claim certification for any Gree model.
Compare warranty and support separately
Read the warranty terms for coverage, exclusions and the claim process. Compare those terms separately from advertised service life and laboratory cycle counts. For a Gree product, contact support with the model you are considering and your equipment's requirements.
Before changing battery settings
Use the instructions for your exact battery and charger. Do not copy another model's charging voltage, temperature limits or firmware procedure from a comparison article. If performance changes unexpectedly, start with our charging and runtime troubleshooting guide.
