Lithium Battery Troubleshooting: Why Your Battery Won't Hold a Charge
A shorter runtime, a falling charge percentage and a battery that will not charge are different symptoms. Start by recording what happens before changing settings or replacing parts. This guide covers initial checks; the instructions for your exact battery, charger and system take priority.
1. Identify the battery and the symptom
Record the battery model, chemistry, nominal voltage and capacity from its label. Note the charger model, connected equipment, recent changes and any displayed alarms. Describe whether the problem occurs during charging, under load or while the system is idle.
2. Check charging compatibility
Compare the charger profile, voltage and current settings with the battery manufacturer's requirements. A charger being labelled “lithium” is not enough to establish compatibility with every battery. Ask support to confirm settings if the documentation is unclear. Do not raise charging voltage to force a battery to accept charge or bypass a protection shutdown.
3. Review loads and operating conditions
Check whether additional equipment or standby loads are consuming energy. Use the system's approved shutdown procedure when it is not in use. Small remaining loads can continue draining an already depleted battery. Follow the battery's specified charging, discharging and storage temperature limits; do not apply a universal temperature chart or another model's settings.
4. Separate charge percentage from battery health
State of charge describes the estimated charge remaining. It is not the same as state of health or measured capacity. Some battery monitors need synchronization under manufacturer-defined charging conditions. For example, the SmartShunt manual describes synchronization after specified full-charge conditions are met. This is an example for that monitor, not a Gree battery reset procedure.
Do not deliberately discharge a battery to near zero as a general calibration step. Changing a displayed percentage does not demonstrate that lost capacity has been restored.
5. Treat BMS alarms as diagnostic information
Record the exact alarm and the conditions when it appears. A protection shutdown alone does not establish that the BMS is faulty. Use only a documented procedure for your exact model or instructions from support. Do not open the battery, bypass protection, or attempt cell balancing or a generic BMS reset.
When to contact Gree Battery
If charging repeatedly stops, runtime remains unexpectedly short, or a protection alarm returns, contact support at Support@greebattery.com. Include your order number, battery and charger model labels, alarm screenshots, connected loads and a description of the issue. See our warranty page for coverage and claim information.
