The Ultimate Lithium Battery Buying Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Start your battery search with the equipment you want to power. Record its voltage requirements, typical energy use, peak demand and available installation space. Then compare exact product models using the same checklist.

Identify the chemistry

LiFePO4, also called LFP, is a lithium-ion chemistry. It is not a separate category opposed to all lithium-ion batteries. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies lithium iron phosphate as an electrode material used in lithium-ion batteries. Ask for the chemistry of each product rather than relying on a generic “lithium” label.

Compare energy and output separately

Record nominal voltage, capacity in amp-hours, energy in watt-hours, continuous discharge current and permitted peak current with its duration. Amp-hour figures alone are insufficient when comparing batteries at different voltages. For a planning example, nominal energy equals nominal voltage multiplied by rated amp-hours; actual delivered energy depends on operating conditions and system limits.

Check your inverter, motor or other equipment against the complete output specification. For energy budgeting, use our off-grid battery sizing guide.

Confirm compatibility before ordering

  • Battery voltage range and equipment input range.
  • Approved charger profile and charge-current limits.
  • Dimensions, mounting orientation, terminals and cable clearance.
  • Charging, discharging and storage temperature limits.
  • Whether the exact model supports series or parallel connections.
  • Required accessories and what is included in the purchase.

Request written clarification when a specification is missing. Bluetooth, heating, balancing and protection features should be checked for each model.

Read lifespan claims with their conditions

Ask what depth of discharge, temperature, current and capacity-retention threshold support an advertised cycle count. Review our performance and lifespan guide for a test-report checklist. Compare warranty coverage separately from projected service life.

Prepare a shortlist

List the models that meet your requirements, then compare total purchase cost, necessary accessories, documentation and support. Send your equipment model, system voltage and usage needs to Gree Battery support for help checking a proposed setup. Installation and operating instructions must come from the documentation for your selected products.
